Riven problem

Many years ago, I played Riven on a Windows 95 machine without a
problem. Now, I would like to play again on Windows XP. It works OK,
but there is a problem.

At the very beginning of the game, there is something that looks like
an opening of a sewer with five buttons. One I press on one of them,
I see the button going down but then it is replaced by a black square.

Any of the buttons, or handles or whatever I want to touch (like the
locked wooden door at the start), when I press on them or make them
move, they are not replaced by the original image, they are replaced
by a black square or rectangle.

To show you what I mean, I put screen shots of the problem on this
photo album:

http://public.fotki.com/rousseaupaul/riven/

The first two images are of the sewer, before and after I press the
buttons.
The last two images are of the door, before and after I try to open
it.

How can I fix this? Is there a way to fix this? I know that there
is a patch out there for Riven, installing it didn't change anything.

Thanks for your help.

I don't know if this is your problem, but there was a v1.02 patch for Riven.
If you haven't installed the patch, that could be it, since the patch fixed
some video problems with the game.

As I said in my original post, I did try the patch and it didn't change anything.

Thanks anyway.

Try upgrading graphic card drivers.
I once had a problem with Myst and I had to downgrade my graphic card
drivers to make it happen.
So try some drivers to see if it fixes anything

Try lowering the hardware acceleration setting from your graphic card.
Try looking into the settings from the Quicktime player preferences. Look if
changing anything on the video tab there can help.
Try installing quicktime from cd

Spend the amount of time on it you like, after that, take a break and find
another computer to play on.

Yes, some people have experienced problems because
their computers have a newer version of QuickTime
than Riven was designed for. I'm not sure if this is
your problem or not, but try installing the version of
QuickTime that comes on the CD, then restart and see
if that helps. (It's okay to have 2 version of QuickTime
installed at the same time.)

yeah, I'll try all that but I don't think it will work. I have tried
some of it already. I'll just wait a few years until I can afford a
new computer on which to install Windows 95 or Windows 98, then I'll
play Riven.

It's funny because Myst (the version I bought in 1994) worked
perfectly fine on the same computer running Windows XP (under Windows
95 compatibility mode). But with Riven (the version from 1997), it
doesn't work.

Thanks for your help.
